How THCA Becomes THC: Decarboxylation, Explained With the Math
THCA plus heat equals THC. Here is the reaction, the 0.877 multiplier labs use to account for it, and a worked COA example that reconciles to the third decimal.

Every product this site covers depends on one chemical reaction. The flower in the bag is mostly THCA — tetrahydrocannabinolic acid — which in its raw, unheated state is not meaningfully intoxicating. Add heat and it becomes delta-9 THC, which is. The conversion is called decarboxylation, and it is the beginning and end of how THCA flower works: as a legal category, as a product, and as an experience.
Let's be plain about it, because a lot of marketing isn't: THCA converts to THC when you heat it, and the result gets you high. Anyone selling THCA flower as a non-intoxicating technicality is misleading you about the chemistry, the law, or both. This article walks through the reaction, the math labs use to account for it, and why a federal statute hinges on a single carboxyl group.
What the "A" in THCA actually is
Cannabis plants do not make THC. They make cannabinoid acids — THCA, CBDA, CBGA — each one carrying a carboxyl group (–COOH) bolted onto the molecule. THCA is delta-9 THC plus that carboxyl group.
The carboxyl group matters because it changes the molecule's shape and behavior. THCA is bulkier and more polar than THC, and it does not fit the CB1 receptor the way THC does. That is the mechanical reason raw flower doesn't do much if you eat it off the stem: the key doesn't fit the lock until the extra hardware comes off.
The reaction: heat removes the carboxyl group
Decarboxylation is the loss of that carboxyl group as carbon dioxide. Warm the molecule enough and the –COOH breaks away, leaves as CO2 gas, and what remains is delta-9 THC.
The reaction runs on a time-and-temperature tradeoff:
- Room temperature: conversion happens, but over months. This is why old flower shows more delta-9 (and more CBN) on retest — see our flower storage guide for how to slow the clock.
- ~105–120°C (roughly 220–250°F): the commonly cited efficient window. Conversion proceeds in minutes to tens of minutes without boiling off the more delicate terpenes.
- Higher temperatures: faster conversion, but terpenes evaporate and, past a point, THC itself starts degrading.
A dry herb vaporizer set between roughly 175°C and 210°C performs decarboxylation and volatilization in the same breath — the THCA converts and the resulting THC vaporizes into the draw. A flame does the same job in a fraction of a second at combustion temperatures, with the side effect of incinerating a share of what you paid for. For completeness: home processors decarboxylate flower in an oven (figures around 110°C for 30–45 minutes are commonly cited) before infusing it. Results vary with equipment and material, and nothing about that process is precise — treat any "exact" home-decarb chart with suspicion.
The math: why labs multiply by 0.877
Here is the part worth actually memorizing, because it protects your wallet.
When THCA loses its carboxyl group, it loses mass — the CO2 that floats away weighs something. The molecular weight of THCA is about 358.5 g/mol; delta-9 THC is about 314.5 g/mol. Divide one by the other:
314.5 ÷ 358.5 = 0.877
So a gram of pure THCA can only ever become 0.877 grams of THC. About 12.3% of the mass leaves as gas. Every competent lab accounts for this with the standard total-THC formula:
Total THC = (THCA × 0.877) + delta-9 THC
This is why the giant THCA number on the bag is not the amount of THC you can get from it. A 28% THCA flower tops out at roughly 24.6% potential THC — before any losses from your device or technique.
A worked example from a real COA
We analyzed a Fern Valley Farms certificate of analysis that reads: 25.582% THCA, 0.253% delta-9 THC, 22.688% total THC. Check the vendor's arithmetic:
- 25.582 × 0.877 = 22.435
- 22.435 + 0.253 = 22.688
The published total reconciles with the published inputs to the third decimal. That is what a lab doing its job looks like, and it took us under a minute to verify — the same minute we spend on every COA we review (our Fern Valley Farms review has the full audit). Why the law cares about one carboxyl group
The 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp as cannabis with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis. Note the wording: delta-9. Flower carrying 25% THCA and 0.25% delta-9 reads as hemp under a delta-9-only test, even though heating it produces an entirely ordinary cannabis experience. That definitional gap is the whole THCA flower market.
States noticed. Many now test for total THC — the 0.877 formula written into statute — which reclassifies THCA flower as marijuana no matter what the bag says. By our count as of August 2026, only five states are cleanly legal for THCA flower, ten sit in gray territory, and thirty-six restrict or ban it. What this means when you're holding a bag
Three practical conclusions from the chemistry:
- The label number is a ceiling, not a delivery guarantee. THCA percent × 0.877 is the theoretical maximum; device efficiency and technique take their cut from there. More on what the headline number does and doesn't tell you in what a THCA percentage really means.
- Heat control is product control. A vaporizer working inside the conversion window extracts efficiently; a lighter overshoots it by several hundred degrees.
- Your body doesn't read the Farm Bill. Once heated, THCA is THC, your metabolism processes it as THC, and a drug screen will find THC metabolites. No asterisks — the blunt details are in THCA and drug testing.
