How to Read a COA: The 10-Minute Skill That Protects Every Purchase

Every claim a THCA vendor makes lives or dies on one PDF. Here's how to read it in ten minutes — including the total-THC math, walked through on a real batch that reconciles.

Every claim a THCA vendor makes — the percentage on the label, the "federally compliant" badge, the strain name itself — lives or dies on one document: the certificate of analysis. Vendors know most buyers never open it. This guide makes you the buyer who does. Ten minutes, five fields, one formula, and you can audit any listing in the industry the same way we do.

Context for why the skill pays: what's on that COA determines whether the flower is legal hemp or an unshippable felony in your state (the 0.3% delta-9 line does all that work), and whether the potency you're paying for exists. This is a desk skill — the same one behind every ranking on this site.

What a COA is

A certificate of analysis is a lab report: a licensed laboratory takes a sample from a production batch, runs it through instrumentation (typically liquid chromatography for cannabinoids), and publishes what it found. For hemp flower, the COA answers three questions. What cannabinoids are present, and how much? Does the delta-9 THC content sit at or under 0.3% by dry weight — the entire legal basis for selling it? And, on fuller reports, is the product clean — pesticides, heavy metals, microbials, and (for concentrates) residual solvents.

Two kinds circulate. Potency-only COAs cover cannabinoids and nothing else — the industry's minimum viable paperwork. Full-panel COAs add the contaminant screens. Both are worth reading; only one tells you the flower wasn't grown in questionable soil.

The five fields that matter

  1. The lab's name and accreditation. A real COA names a real laboratory with an address, a license or accreditation you can look up (ISO/IEC 17025 is the standard to search for), and usually a signature from a lab director. If the lab can't be found outside the PDF, stop reading.
  2. The batch or sample ID. The COA must tie to the specific batch being sold — matching the batch number on the product listing or package label. A beautiful lab report for some other batch is a brochure. This is the difference between per-strain paperwork and true batch-matched documentation, and it's the axis our vendor rankings turn on.
  3. The cannabinoid table. Percent-by-weight rows for THCA, delta-9 THC, CBD, CBDA, and the minor cannabinoids, plus "ND" (not detected) or "<LOQ" (below the limit of quantitation) entries. Those abbreviations are healthy signs — real instruments have detection floors, and real labs report them.
  4. The total-THC line — and its math. Covered in full below, because it's the field vendors most hope you skim.
  5. The dates. Sample received, analysis completed, report issued. Flower turns over constantly; a COA from eighteen months ago describes flower that no longer exists. Recent harvest, recent test, or ask why.

The formula, walked on real numbers

Total THC = (THCA × 0.877) + delta-9 THC.

The 0.877 isn't a fudge factor — it's molecular arithmetic. THCA converts to THC by losing a carboxyl group when heated (decarboxylation), and the departing CO2 takes about 12.3% of the molecule's mass with it. A gram of pure THCA can therefore only ever become 0.877 grams of THC. Any "total THC" that just adds THCA and delta-9 together at face value is overstating what the flower can deliver.

Here's the check run on a real published batch — a Fern Valley Farms flower COA from our vendor audit, which we use as the worked example precisely because it reconciles:

The recomputation: 25.582 × 0.877 = 22.435. Add the delta-9: 22.435 + 0.253 = 22.688. Matches the stated line exactly, to the third decimal. That's what honest paperwork looks like, and it took a calculator and ninety seconds. (It's a large part of why Fern Valley sits atop our vendor board — the full review has the rest.)

Notice what the math also tells you: this "25.582%" flower delivers at most ~22.7% THC once heated. The headline THCA number is always bigger than the deliverable one, which is why menus lead with it — and why a THCA percentage tells you less than you think.

While you're on the cannabinoid table, glance at the delta-9 row against the legal line: at or under 0.3% by dry weight is what makes the product hemp. Note that a growing number of states test total THC rather than delta-9 alone — flower legal under the federal definition can still be illegal where you live, which is the whole reason our state tracker exists.

The ten-minute routine

  1. Find the COA before adding to cart. On the product page is best practice; behind an email request is a yellow flag.
  2. Look up the lab. Real name, real accreditation, findable outside the PDF.
  3. Match the batch ID to the listing or label.
  4. Recompute total THC with the 0.877 formula. It should reconcile within rounding.
  5. Check the delta-9 row against 0.3%, and your state's testing standard against the legality tracker.
  6. Check the dates — test recent enough to describe the flower actually shipping.
  7. Skim for contaminant panels, and notice whether "full panel" claims are backed by actual result tables.

One closing disclosure, in keeping with house policy: reading lab reports will not make THCA flower gentle. It converts to THC when heated, it is intoxicating, and it will show on a drug test. The COA doesn't change what the product is — it verifies you're getting the product you were promised. That's the entire skill, and now it's yours.
